First Pass: Qatar airport launches one of world’s largest biometric travel systems
Paperless departures now completed in seconds
DOHA – The Hamad International Airport (HIA) and Qatar Airways have officially launched Fast Pass, a new biometric service that allows passengers to complete key departure procedures using facial recognition technology.
Developed in partnership with technology provider SITA, the system is designed to reduce the need for physical travel documents while speeding up the airport journey.
The rollout connects more than 700 biometric-enabled touchpoints, making it one of the largest implementations of its kind in the Middle East and globally.
Fast Pass
Passengers can register for Fast Pass either through self-service check-in kiosks at the airport or via the Qatar Airways mobile app. Once enrolled, departing travellers can use dedicated biometric touchpoints at check-in, bag drop, security screening and boarding gates, with facial recognition serving as their boarding pass.
The process takes only a few seconds, reducing document checks and helping shorten queues, particularly during peak travel periods. The service is optional, with conventional processing remaining available for passengers who choose not to enrol. Airport staff are also on hand to assist throughout the journey.
Biometric identification
The launch comes as demand for biometric travel continues to increase worldwide. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), most passengers now prefer biometric identification over carrying and presenting physical documents.
Fast Pass forms part of Hamad International Airport's wider Innovation Roadmap, which aims to introduce more efficient and seamless passenger services. The airport said the large-scale deployment demonstrates how paperless passenger processing can be implemented across multiple stages of the travel experience while maintaining security and data protection at every step.
HIA also confirmed that Fast Pass will continue expanding to additional airport touchpoints. The capability is expected to become available in the near future to other airlines operating from Hamad International Airport through continued collaboration with technology partners.
